Is anyone else having problem with the SNAP tool by Raceshape? - http://strava-tools.raceshape.com/snap/

I'm trying to correct this ride http://app.strava.com/activities/66342964 to the route shown below.

strava-odd.png

I'm stuck with a spinning 'cog' and 'This could take 30+ seconds'. I've tried this with 3 different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, I.E.) and on three different computers. It cant just be me can it?

Are there any other tools that will correct the correct/alter GPS of my ride?

Maybe it should be a lesson to me to not rely on a smart phone for GPS, especially on lowish battery.

    Cheers I'll do that.

So you recon it's a problem with Strava letting Raceshape have my gps data rather than a problem with Raceshape itself?

Phones have rubbish GPS tracking capabilities. I've confirmed this by comparing my Nokia Lumia 710 (very good tracking for a phone) and a Bryton 35 GPS. The Bryton follows roads and can track my exact movements even under trees. The phone just can't track properly, with odd lines like your example.

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.

I couldnt get it to work the other day, tried about 10 times then gave up.

It puts up a message saying 'this may take 30 seconds or more' and then just sits there doing bugger all for infinity seconds. At least the message is correct.

I've also had very good GPS results on a near identical route - http://app.strava.com/activities/65890554 .

I don't really want to buy a dedicated GPS tracker when my phone should (and has done in the past) tracked fine, but I can appreciate a dedicated GPS will have better GPS hardware.

My phone (HTC One X) was about 35% battery when I went out and I'm wondering if that could have affected its GPS. I'll try and keep the battery topped up from now on just in case.

I've found that my phone (Sony Xperia U) running google MyTracks is far better than my Bryton Cardio 35.
Battery life shouldn't affect it too badly, but if you're not using the map you can turn off your data which saves loads of battery for long rides.

I've also found leaving the phone/gps to settle on it's initial location for 5 minutes helps loads, otherwise sometimes I get an 'offset' along the whole route.

I've had that GPS offset before too, and I pretty much just start the Strava app and set off straight away. I'll let it get a GPS fix for a bit longer next time, thanks for the tip.

Summat to do with Strava switching off the API's, or someones isp blocking them. All a bit tedious really.

Out of curiosity I went to have a look at the Strava API and I notice the following on their API news page:
    Retiring V1 and V2 APIs by June 1, 2013

As part of the V3 API roll-out process, we will be discontinuing V1 and V2 APIs on May 31. Libraries, sites, and applications that use V1 and V2 endpoints will cease to work as the underlying API endpoints will no longer be available.

I think I may have found the answer :(
It may be time to dust off my software development 'skills' and give it a go myself on the new API... Buying a Garmin Edge is suddenly more appealing :P

Edit: I cant even do that! grrr rubbish!
Any developer who has been granted access to V3 of the API has been contacted. We will revisit our API program and applications from time to time, but for the time being, we have no plans to grant further access in 2013.
