Driver goes wrong way up one way street, "Panics" because cyclist "shouts" at him, hits cyclist and two pedestrians before embedding car in a bus (photo on site) then blames cyclists.

A Chinese chap going on about too many bicycles? I take it he's never actually been to China?

Kingston is my local big town, it's a remarkable bit of driving from the driver.

My wife saw the immediate aftermath of the accident, before the police got there. Apparently one woman he hit got carried along on the bonnet before being driven into the side of the bus. I believe she was the one taken away in the air ambulance. At the time she was being attended to by a cycling paramedic. So good job there are bicycle people as they could get to the scene faster.
Some more info and a picture of his rather special parking on the local rag website.
Now the driver is manager of a place that is about 100 yards away from that point on the one way system. He must know very well which way the traffic goes. Yet he was so panicked by someone shouting at him he turned the wrong way. Some people should not be allowed to drive, I doubt a horse would bolt as easily as that.

    not arrested or charged either.

Certain members of the police force need shooting...with water pistols obviously.

    Then sacked.

Assuming this to be a serious Q, this was posted by a policeman on another site:
Because you don't need to be arrested to be investigated, interviewed or prosecuted. Roads Policing officers seldom arrest for traffic offences-offenders are usually reported for summons to court.

They may also choose to arrest him after he leaves hospital-if they arrest him whilst he's there they'd then have to pay a copper to sit with him in hospital as he's technically in custody.

That figures. I was involved in an RTA once, and was allowed to leave the scene after being told there would be an investigation which could subsequently result in a charge of dangerous driving or similar (in my case it didn't).

There are too many incompetent drivers on the road.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

That's fair enough then I suppose. Was more of a jokey comment anyway pointing out how ridiculous it seems that you can do so much damage (human and material) and just walk away almost scot free.

Will be interesting to see what happens in court then

Arresting is different to charging is different from being summonsed to answer that (or another) charge.....

Arresting probably only happens in less than 5% of cases that end in court and is usually only done when there is
1/ A risk to person from leaving the person free
2/ A risk that evidence will be lost
3/ They can't establish the suspects ID to a satisfactory level

In this case the evidene is all there and won't change, they know who he is and where to find him, arresting is neither necesary nor beneficial and would (as pointed out) be a pain in the arse and a waste of resources.

Walked past the scene this morning. First thought: how the hell did he manage that?

Don't you hate that, when you're minding your own business, driving the wrong way down a one way street and bloody cyclists shout at you?
  • And he's been done for 6months etc. http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/topstories/10929171.BMW_driver_who_hit_pedestrians_and_crashed_into_double_decker_bus_disqualified/?ref=var_0

He obviously knew it was one way but didn't want to wait in traffic going round the one way system. Bet he did this on a regular basis.

It doesn't matter how many times I look at it, I just don't understand how you could turn right there.

I'm guessing he did panic, I can't imagine there being many times could could use that cut though, and i rather suspect people would notice.

I agree, complete and total panic of such enormous proportions that he turned the wrong way at a junction he can see from his desk. I reckon he just stuck his foot down and just swerved to try and avoid whatever was immediately in front of him with absolutely no thought process at all. A bit like a toddler playing a video game.
