Ok folks im hoping you can clarify the usage of the gate and lockout on my forks. As a general rule i dont use the lockout or compression blue dial. However the other day i thought i would give it a go on a particularly steep uphill bit.

With the gate (gold knob) fully open the forks compress smoothly.

With the gate open and the compression closed the forks compress the same as above.

With the gate closed and the compression open the forks compress as above.

With the gate closed and the compression closed the forks lock out.

Is this correct or should the lockout work with the gate fully open or is that not the point?

Also how do you tell what year your forks are?

Many thanks

the gate is just the point that the fork starts moving. ie the gate only works when the lock out is one. the point that the lock out is over ridden (blow off) is set by the gate.

So same as Nick says yes. Set your gate where you want it and use the lockout to turn it on and off.
