Tyre wear - safe to ride?

Had a bit of a minor incident the other week when a car stopped unexpectedly in front of me. Was following 10m or so behind, but turns out that's not quite enough on a slight downhill. Ended up locking my rear wheel and sliding to a halt, fortunately just before I ran into the back of the car. Checked my tyres when I got home and they now have a couple of patches (3-5cm each) where they are worn through to the carcass:

I figure these probably need replacing, and having done about 2500-3000 miles I don't feel they really owe me anything (the rear tyre was pretty squared off before this happened), but is this safe to ride until the new tyres arrive?

    It's your neck. I wouldn't ride them.

Its the one contact spot with the road, so I would always make sure tyres are well kept and good quality.

I wouldn't ride on them, and you're more likely to get a flat with limit protection to the tube......

2500-3000 miles means they're well worn already, at or near the point of needing replacing so treat yourself to a nice new pair of tyres and "upgrade" while you're at it.

I wouldn't ride them personally, could easily blow mid-ride in that state (was on a ride a few weeks back and someone locked up and skidded enough they went straight through the tyre and had a blowout, at least they were nearly stopped though, your's might go at 40mph on a descent...)

That's just the rear tyre, right?

It's not unusual to bin off the rear tyre, move your front tyre to the back and fit a brand new tyre to the front. Gets the most use out of your tyres.

Wait for the new tyre it is, then. Already ordered when I first noticed the patches, just annoying to be off the bike when the weather is so good!

I'm sure you could do some rides until the new ones arrive. Just don't follow cars by 10m until you get some newones :p.
