Courses on Garmin 800 / Garmin Connect / ridewithgps

I've got a Garmin 800. If I plan a route (or 'course') using Garmin Connect it is easy to upload it to the device and I can edit my expected average speed (the default, oddly, is set to 6mph, which must be slower than anyone anywhere cycles) to a more realistic 17mph. But I can't get turn-by-turn instructions, only the map. Sometimes it's difficult to follow the map and it would be useful to have the page where you can see how far it is until the next turn you need to make.

If I plan a route using ridewithgps.com and then copy it onto the Garmin 800 I can get these turn-by-turn directions. But I can't edit the average speed, so it assumes I will be riding at 6mph. This is annoying because on the 'course' page on the device it gives me completely wrong information about how much longer I need to keep riding for (i.e. it will tell me I've got another three hours to go, when actually I'll be done in less than an hour).

Is there a way of either:
a) using Garmin Connect to give turn-by-turn instructions?
or
b) editing the route average speed using ridewithgps?
