Old steel frame - rear mech rattles
Have gone all modern on my old steel frame, fitted indexed gears
But the rear mech - whilst it's indexed ok - rattles incessantly - what am I doing wrong? Was same rear mech on the old friction set up, worked a dream, no rattles...help please

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Well there's your problem! Now put your old shifters back on and consign the indexed ones to where they belong and all will be good again!*
* one of the nice things about friction shifting - you automatically optimise the rear mech alignment so it doesn't matter how bent/worn any component in the system is, you still get perfect alignment in every gear.....Faster than a tent.......0 -

when does it happen?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Rattles when it's in gear - shifts fine, but chain doesn't "bed" onto the sprocket, sounds like it's in between gears

Almost certain it's either a bend hangar or rear mech.

You mentioned earlier that "it's indexed OK". Just how sure are you of this? I only ask because it's very hard to offer any kind of constructive advise without actually seeing what's going on.0 -
I know it indexes OK 'cos I've tried it - it moves from cog to cog but doesn't "bed" - like in the old days of friction shifting, when you'd get some numpty riding along with the bike not quite in gear
I did bend the gear hanger a while back in a crash, the LBS straightened it out, guess it's still not quite there?

It could be the mech that's bent. My dad's old Raleigh had a bent rear mech and had exactly the problem you're getting. He was about to buy a new mech but as a last resort tried (quite forcefully) bending the rear mech cage in line and it worked!

"I know it indexes OK 'cos I've tried it - it moves from cog to cog but doesn't "bed""
So it's not properly indexed then.
Have a fiddle with the barrel adjuster on the rear mech and see if you can get it to shift from cog to cog and sit properly on the sprockets. Might only need half a turn.
Alternatively, are you sure the shifters, chain and cassette are all the same speed??0
