best xc 29er

hi guys,this is my first post and my question is.......whats the best sub 2k bike available? am i better looking at a 29er? im 5ft 6inches tall and ive started doing mtb challenges. my current bike is a trek fuel ex8. ive been told that its not ideal for these events and should look at a hardtail. ive currently been looking at giant xtc , specialized carve , trek superfly and the ghost actinium. any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated as im getting very confused!! cheers ian

What do MTB challenges entail ie terrain, distance etc?

Quite, you need to know what sort of terrain and distance. However, it sounds like something light and with some comfort. A titanium hardtail ?

distances are between 20-30 miles and terrain varies between roads to really techy stuff
