Do these tyres need changing?

Hey everyone,

first post, I am quite new to cycling (am mostly a runner) but took up cycling recently when decided I would like to move in to Triathlons.

With my lack of experience comes a lack of knowledge so am looking for a bit of advice. I am taking part in the Peak District Punisher a week on Saturday (77 Mile) and last night when I was moving the bike around in the garage and noticed some slight wear on the rear tyre. I have done around 500 km on the bike I think so nothing enourmous but the tyre looks like it might be starting to tear along the side wall.

I have attached two links to the photos so if people could take a look and see if this is normal or if I should order some new tyres pronto it would be much appreciated!

If I should replace the tyres, what would people suggest. I have seen these which seem a decent buy and get good reviews but would these be a good tyre for both training and events. Ie will they wear well and be strong enough to withstand the horrible british roads.

or would these be a bit more resilient?

Looks as though the thread is unravelling slightly on the side wall.

I had some Schwalbe tyres that did the very same, annoying but not an actual replacement neccesity.

Just unravelling a bit. Happening to my Conti GP4000s at the moment. Just keep an eye on it; if the strands get long enough they can get wound round the wheel hub.

  • thanks chaps. Ill keep an eye on it then. So this will likely be ok for about 250 km over the next two weeks then?

Back to my original post, what would be a better all round tyre from the two I posted when it is time to replace?

    Cheers,

    Tom

If they are schwhalbe ultremo s you will need to contact schwhalbe UK who should replace the tyres FOC as it is a manufacturing fault. Same happened to me a couple of years ago. Dave at Schwalbe is very helpful. He will probably send new inner tubes as well.....
