My AVG recently stopped updating itself saying they were no updates available. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the 2013 edition and all works fine now. Perhaps they have stopped supporting the older version?
Just thought this might be helpful to someone else.

... dunno... just uploaded the 2013 to my heretofore infected laptop... but now, all seems good and it's updated itself at least once since install (about 2 weeks)... now, back to more PORN.0

If you want an alternative free try Avira0

AVG normally lets you know if the "old" version needs updating to the new version.
It did for me on XP, Vista and Win7.0 -
I got rid of AVG and replaced it with Avira, AVG kept on crashing my PC. And I even had to go into 'Safe Mode' to uninstall it.0

I switched from AVG to Avast a while ago. Seems to keep itself updated without any issues. You have to renew your free licence annually, but that's not a problem.0
