Emergency repairs: What do you carry?

After some years of having road bikes, we just bought ourselves a couple of mountain bikes. On our second trip out (on the South Downs) my derailleur hanger snapped off leaving us with a 10k push/roll/scoot/tow back to the nearest bike shop in Brighton!
I had a few tools (& an inner tube) with me, just enough to get the derailleur off. But I didn't have a chain tool. (When we made it to Brighton I bought a chain tool, shortened the chain to make a single speed and that got us back.)
With hindsight I needed a chain tool and something to cut the end of the gear cable (i.e. something to remove the cable "cap" so I could slide the derailleur off; I had some small pliers but they didn't have a cutter in the jaws, so I had to rely on bending and metal fatigue!)
So my question is, what do you experienced types carry with you in terms of tools & spares for emergency repairs?

Of course most of those people are pussies. All you really need is rum in the camelbak and bacon sarmies.
Anything else you need just mug the next rider past.I don't do smileys.
