Tyres coming up to 3000 miles - worth changing?

With a little under four weeks to go before the RL100, I'm starting to think about making sure the bike is in tip-top condition, and it occurs to me that I've now done almost 3000 miles on my stock Giant tyres since getting the bike last October.

They seem to be in good nick - no damage, no obvious internal layers visible through the outer rubber.

But if I'm going to change them, I want to do it soon so that I can wear them in a bit before the big day.

Is it worth it? If so, what should I get, I know nothing about tyres? The ones I have are 700x23c, and 25c is probably too big for my Crud Roadracer mk2 mudguards.
Is the gorilla tired yet?

you dont need to change until you start getting punctures really. the tyres will let you know

but if you want to change i am a massive fan of Continental .. and ideally i really like the gp4000

    its a personal thing really

Sounds like you don't *need* to change them, but there's nothing wrong with changing them because you want to.

You may not need to change both tyres. Rear tyres take way more punishment than front tyres, so many people (including myself) will scrap the rear tyre, move the old front tyre onto the rear and then put a new tyre up front.

The front tyre is the one where you need it to be performing at it's best in terms of grip etc.

The rear tyre can be a little worn (though, as Pinarellokid says, the tyre will let you know when it is too worn).

Too many people replace both tyres when the front tyre will, in reality, be hardly worn.
