What are the symptoms of an 'out of line' rear derailleur hanger?

  • Really you should be able to go behind the bike and tell by sight if its bent, but the main symptom would be the gears would never be perfectly shifting, i.e you may get it to shift up the cassette perfect, but shifting down the casstte would be appalling. Take it to your LBS and they could bend it back for you, but i would recommend replacing it as its pennies for a new hanger.

the hanger for mine is about £20 ... hardly pennies ... but I suppose compared to a damaged derailleur or frame it is relatively cheap.

Cheapest I've ever seen a hanger was a tenner. They are more usually £20 or more. As you say, still cheaper than having the rear mech go into the back wheel.

When I bent mine the symptoms were the rear mech tinkling against the spokes of the back wheel if I tried to engage the 2 lowest gears

Luckily I was able to straighten it when I got home using a vice and a large adjustable spanner :D
  • Often if it's only slightly bent then one of the symptoms is that the gears will shift properly on most of the sprockets, but not on two/three of the larger sprockets.
