Gear Issue, Maybe Rear Cassette Replacement?

Hi Everyone

I'm new to cycling and for a couple of months have been happily riding about on my early 90's Raleigh Scorpio 12 Speed. It might not be new or the best etc however I think it's great and it's all I could afford.

I've an issue with the gears. The chain seems to jump on the cassette from one sprocket to another. This happens a lot in the top 2 gears (5th & 6th). I'm sure I've read/heard that I might need to replace the sprocket as the gears may be worn?

If so are replacement parts available? I've had a quick look on amazon and found some 6 speed cassettes but not sure if they're the correct ones. If I replace is this an easy thing to do and would it be advisable to change the chain at the same time ?

Many Thanks in advance.

Chris

if it's jumping between gears, rather than slipping on one, then it's more likely that it needs adjusting aka indexing

    see here...

..or google for other pages on the topic "rear derailleur indexing"

btw all bikes are best, irrespective of age, price or features

  • Are you sure that it actually uses cassettes and not a freewheel, as I suspect that not many bikes in that price range in the 90s would have had a cassette system.
