Some rims have a wear indicator, either a groove in the brake track or a little indentation. If yours don't replace the rims when they become significantly concave. If you can't decide whether they're worn, get a bike shop to look at them.

Your rims may have a wear indicator - typically a groove machines into the brake track. Once the groove dissappears, then the rim wall has worn too thin. If not, you can measure the rim wall thickness using a digital caliper and replace when thinner than 1mm. Finally, if the rim walls are distinctly concave i.e. bowing-out, then it's a sign the sidewall is about to part company. Finally, if you get pulsing of the brakes which feels like a buckled wheel and yet it runs true, then again rim is about to fail.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

That's great thanks. There is a groove in the wall. Looks like I'm good for a while.
