What the hell is this all about?

Creaking on my Roubaix S works BB so downloaded the instructions for servicing.

Apparently I need a specialized bearing puller, a bearing press, thread lock, plus parts.

And the previous owner over tightened the cap screw, so needed a stud extractor to remove that.

Previous roubaix had hollotech 2 which was a ten minute job.....

Furious.....just why is the point of this stupid system.....

That's a blow, I've got one of those myself and thought it was normal HollowTech II (it's 2012 Ultegra 6700). What groupset is yours?

yes just different names for the same thing

spesh call their version of BB30 OSBB

But still, it is press fit bearings, 2 types of locking/retaining compound, and 2 special tools to extract and replace the bearings

Rather than 2 bearing cups and a fecking spanner as with Hollowtech 2

fsa's 'basic' bb30 tools aren't pricey, removal tool is a fiver (use it to drift out the bearings), installation tool is eight quid, add a big nut+bolt and some washers and you're tooled up...

...does the job, comparable in price to a cheap htii tool

fwiw i don't use loctite (chunky steel bb shell), but if specialized are saying it's necessary on theirs then it suggests the shell tolerances aren't tight, which could explain the creaking, 641 or 609 (higher strength) are the ones people seem to use

but it might be worth trying grease instead, saves faffing about with retaining compound and makes subsequent servicing simpler

I have to service the bottom bracket on my CAAD 10 which is also BB30, I seen on this forum that some people used retaining compound, but according to Loctite the only way to remove the bearings that have been installed with compound will be to heat up where the compound will be used, not too sure how this will work with the paint on the frame, so I think I will use grease unless someone can tell me that using compound will be totally safe.
