How to service Ksyrium Elite FRONT hub?

My front wheel (Ksyrium Elite) is making a scraping sound from the front hub when it spins.

I'm pretty handy and have all the tools, but a front hub is something i have never played with before. I dont want to take it to a shop if i can help it.

I've had a look and cant see any obvious way to open it up to clean and grease it.

All the searches on google seem to pertain to rear hub servicing.

Mavics website doesnt help much either, but it does suggest that the front hub has sealed bearings - does this mean they are throw-away-and-replace things, rather than fixable?

Any advice?

Thanks!

both front and rear hubs are cartridge style bearings so yes knock them out and press in new.
un-screw the axle and tap out the bearings (carefully) with a large screwdriver, make sure you get exactly the same bearings and carefully press the new ones in...pretty straigth forward to do

    That's great - thanks!

So they arent completely sealed units - i should be able to get to the ball bearings to clean / change / grease them?

    If so, that's great.

    Thanks!
  • not really

A sealed bearing has seals protect the bearings from water etc. best just to replace them(the full bearing),popping the seal out and regreasing will work but not long as the seal has been disturbed. I usualy regrease as a temporary measure (generally on the mtb)

screwdriver is ok for boshing them out if carefull but best making a press from threaded bar, nuts and washers so you dont damage the bearings refitting them i.e pressing them in

I have just had a quick search on a couple of online bike shops and cant find any cartridges for sale.

Could anyone kindly link to the sort of thing i should be looking for?

    Thanks!

I can almost guarantee that you won't need new bearings.

Take the skewer out and stick a 5mm hex in each end of the axle body and unscrew it. Clean the little hub caps and hub body of any debris and reassemble. It requires zero mechanical skills and you can't possibly mess it up. I'm sure this will solve your problem without needing new bearings.

Thanks for the reply - I think you're right.

As for the search function (thanks for the suggestion!) - I did use it and found nothing relating to front hubs - all rear.

    Anyway, thanks for the info.
