For the first time tomorrow I'll be watching the tour live. I plan on catching them as they go up the Horcquette. They should start passing it around half 3, so what time should I intend to get there for before the road closes? I am going by bike, not car.

Road will be closed to vehicles from first thin in the morning. If campervans have already filled the mountain then maybe even tonight. worry not though. Gendarmes will stop bikes about 3 hours before race is due. You will still be able to walk, but Caravane will make it difficult to progress. Get on the mountain for 10am and enjoy the carnival atmosphere as you climb up.

Walk past any gendarmes, then once out of sight get back on until you're stopped and told to walk by the next one. Repeat until you find a good spot to watch the race. They don't really care, it just something to keep them occupied before the publicity caravan arrives.

If you have a good local map – Michelin or IGN – you may be able to find quiet lanes that take you to where you want to go without having to ride along the race route itself.
