First mountain bike buying advice

Hi I'm new to the forum but I know this is a common question so I apologise for asking it again.
I want to get into mountain biking but not entirely sure what to get, I'm willing to spend up to £500 but really just want the best value for money so don't mind going under or slightly over budget.
My problem is I've searched everywhere for advice, but most of it is outdated. from what i gather the best option is a Voodoo Hoodoo or Rockrider 8.1, only thing is I can't get a 2011/2012 Hoodoo and the 2013/2014 one seems a lot worse for the same price. Also people recommending the Rockrider say it's £450, but it's currently £550 so is it still worth the money at £100 more? I initially was thinking of getting a Carrera Vulcan but it seems like spending a bit more is a better idea on the entry level stuff.
I've never really had a mountain bike and have always been into BMX's so i don't know much about what to get. I'll most likely be using whatever i get on blue and red trails, maybe harder if i can, if that's any more help.
Any advice or other recommendations is greatly appreciated

Boardman mountain bike comp £ 584.00 at halfords. Excellent starter that will give you plenty of scope to upgrade parts at a later date. Unfortunately you can't test ride.many people knock halfords build / set up but after 2 boardmans and a carrera I couldn't find fault.0

From what i can tell the Bordman has pretty similar specs to the Rockrider so is it really worth the extra £35? I don't know a lot tho so i'm probably wrong.0

Definitely not wrong. We can advise but ultimately it's down to what feels right for you. Worth noting though that if things like saddle and tyres are awful for what you intend doing you may well end up replacing them sooner rather than later which all adds to the cost.0

The hoodoo is exactly the same spec, if anything there's an upgrade on the new brakes.0

Compared to what? if you mean the old 2011/12 hoodoo it has the same brakes and everything else but worse forks as far as i know.
Also tried out the Rockrider today and i quite liked it, just need to get down to Halfords and have a go on the boardman to see what i prefer.0 -
The Voodoo is still a good buy - the forks are still above most other offerings at this price, and the brakes are certainly better than they were.
But the Boardman is a lot lighter, and the Rockrider the best specced off the lot.0 -
At the minute i'm leaning more towards the Rockrider. I like the look of it and it seems to be the best value for money, but i would like to test the hoodoo and boardman comp before i make a final decision.
Thanks for all the replies and good advice0
