A budget would be a good starting point.

You'll want different tyres for the road and for the off road, nothing will work to anywhere near the best on both surfaces!

  • Ebay..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200645947253? ... 1423.l2649

Have a look at these, cheap enough and not too bad on pavement / road ( a little drumming but liveable), well spaced blocks for the rough stuff. Tbh they may not be anyone elses ideal choice for road or pavement, but then again I'm not usually doing stupid speeds down the local high street .. it upsets the natives.

Those look horrible, and at a kilo each, I'm sure they are.

  • Please don't get those suggested off Ebay. At a kg each it will be like riding through treacle.
As a starting point I would stick a pair of Panaracer Fire XC Pros on. These are just over half the weight of the above. They run fast enough on tarmac, if a bit noisy, but last reasonably well on it. These would do you fine off road until you get far more experienced.
Merlin are doing a pair with inner tubes for £44.99.

If cash is an issue then search around for the wire beaded versions at about £18 each.

No still here just had alot to do this wk,thanks for the replies tho.I was thinking maxxis as i wanna get my bike together and it would be pointless getting a budget tyre and wasting money,i may as well get the top end stuff and build from there.

So, budget, surfaces, what style of riding..........all needded to be known before recommendations can be made!

I'd suggest Schwalbe City Jets for on the road, for the price (circa £10-11 each) they are unbeatable, then something suitable for what you do offroad.

Swchlabe Racing Ralph, dual performance compound, £23.99 a tyre from "next day tyres.co.uk" (this is what I use).

They are great off road when it's all but soaked and they're pretty good on the tarmac.... If you ride loads of miles on the tarmac, they'll wear quicker (but we're still talking over 1500 miles of tarmac miles per set).

Does anyone know how on one smorgasbord are cos they seem a good price. I have the ardents, they are big, they give plenty of confidence.
pity those who don't drink, the way they feel when they wake is the best they will feel all day
