For a drop bars road bike the Trek Domane 2.0 has holes for a rack and is smack on your price.

I've looked at that but I'm not too sure about the suspension type thing at the top of the seat stay/seat tube.

I've seen a rack on a Secteur, does it have proper mounts?

I'm lucky, my old Cannondale CAAD5 has proper mudguard mounts, even on the carbon fork.

Kinesis Racelight has them, good frame too for the money

Another possible option - the Ribble Winter Training bikes, I'm pretty sure they have pannier mounts (I'm sure somebody will be able to confirm this) - available in 7005 Aluminium and 535 Steel, both with carbon forks & you can customise them via the bikebuilder & special edition options.

I can't work out why the Trek is so much more expensive than the Defy 2. They appear to have similar specs but £200 difference.

That Racelight looks nice. What significance is the "audax" bit? A Heftier bike?

The Kenisis bikes are good value - there's both the T2 and Tk3 models that have rack mounts.

The term 'audax' means it's a frame with a more relaxed, rather than racy geometry, and often has rack mounts.
In terms of geometry, (broadly speaking) there's, race-orientated > sportive > audax / touring - the geometry getting slightly more relaxed from one to the next.

I'm looking at similar bikes, although ones I can fit full guards and a rack on.

Without straying into cross bikes I'm aware of the Planet X Kaffenback, Dawes Clubman/Century SE, Tifosi CK7 and Moda Bolero to add to the ones already mentioned.
  • Sectuer has a rack mount.

Aren't there racks to be mounted on a standard road bike?

You can get an adaptor bracket that sits between the axle and frame for the lower rack mount. For the upper mount you can use P-clips. So you can fit a rack to any bike that way, but I wouldn't put over 6-7kg on it.

Kona Honky Tonk, Surly Cross Check, Condor Fratello (frameset with some careful buying around it), Spa Cycles Steel Audax, Kinesis as previously mentioned. Cannondale Synapse does too. There are a lot.

Or, buy an older steel frame, get it refinished, build it up. It's a shame more stuff doesn't come with mounting as a standard.
