Fortunately there’s a list of offences and fixed tariffs. The other day Tony Martin was fined CHF 2,000 for having world champion logos on his time trial bike. He might be the reigning world time trial champion but the UCI has trademarked the rainbow stripes and is increasingly active in guarding this, at least at big races. Note the sum was equal to the fine for Orica-Greenedge’s finish line gate crash.

If he is the reigning UCI TT World Champ then why not be allowed to shout about it?

Rider in yellow typically gets a yellow bike.

Rolland currently helmet to road in polka dots.

I'd possibly understand fining previous winners but not the reigning champion.

As it says, it's a trademark issue. UCI perhaps being a little overly zealous, like the IOC. The rainbow stripes are trademarked, the yellow jersey and polka dots are not.

Geraint Thomas wondered on twitter what they are going to do about Phil Gilbert's tattoo.

If I ever got to be world champion I'd get the rainbow rings tattooed around my todger.

    Where does Gilbert have his?

Yeah, for some reason the UCI banned anyone from wearing the TT champs jersey - like on an individual TT.

I suppose that makes sense now that there is a world TTT championship - but it does seem petty.

That meant that even a slightly different outfit broke the rules - and I think Tony Martin does have some small stripes around his shoulder area. There were a few guys with tiny things on their helmet too - don't know if they got something similar.

On that note I used to read the daily notes of fines etc - and it was interesting. I can't find where you get them now - any ideas?
I'm left handed, if that matters.

Tell him to wear long socks like the ioc told paralympians with Olympic ring tatoos to cover them up.

How can you trademark what is essentially just 5 different coloured lines?

Yeah, but you don't get a team jersey for that.

You can trademark a lot less sophisticated designs than that. The first ever registered trademark was just a red triangle (Bass). In certain circumstances you can trademark a colour.

If my memory serves me correctly, Louboutin managed to trademark shoes with red soles. In light of that, trademarking a distinctive pattern of five colours in a sport should be fairly simple,

There is no kit associated with it though - I think they may get the right to wear some kind of logo/badge on their standard kit.. but nothing apart from that.

More to the point why is it called the rainbow jersey / rainbow bands? When was the last time you saw a rainbow with a black stripe in it?

Tony Martin was fined for the Rainbow Stripes on his bike. In the TTT. The issue was because it was in the TTT. He's allowed to have them on his bike in an ITT, but not the TTT.

Despite the OPQS team being TTT champs, there are no 'Rainbow' rights associated with this title. They get a special logo on their jersey for TTT events, and that's it.

The TTT rules also state no National Champs clothing for TTT events.

You can kind of equate it to someone who is the Individual Pursuit World CHampion riding in a Team Pursuit event - their right of Stripes does not carry over.

Is it complicated and petty? Yes. But so is the UCI.

(And if you want to put Rainbow Stripes on your bike, helmet, equipment, etc - and are the reigning WOrld Champ, you can do so. As long as you inform the UCI first. An email with pics does the job.

if the owner does not strictly enforce their rights to a trademark It is possible to lose those rights due to dilution, ie the mark is no longer particularly associated with the original product or service. Hoover is the famous example. So, whilst the UCI may be petty generally, in this case it is the law that is forcing them to be so.

I have a Planet X carbon seatpost with the WC stripes on it. I wonder why they are there as I'm not sure Planet X have equipped any world champs?

So what do you have to do to get stripes on your macc wheelers jersey?
