I am in the process of choosing a moderately priced bike for my friend and I have a question about low-range Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

I have Shimano BR-M445 on my Cube Analog Disc 2012. I went to the Cube site and saw that the 2013 model range is equipped with Shimano BR-M395. A lot of 2013 bikes from other manufacturers are equipped with Shimano BR-M395 as well.

On the internet, some people make an assumption that Shimano BR-M395 are the new version of Shimano BR-M445, just named awkwardly. It is believable, but I am not so sure about this. Can someone shed some light on this?

No, the first number after the M denotes the series, the higher the better (M9=XTR, M8=Saint down to M5 is Deore, M4 are usually 'non series' while M3 Acera/Altus). That's not to say the M395 may not be based on the M445 (downward migration) but it's not the replacement.

Thanks for clarifying this. M4 are Alivio, I guess.

May be branded Alivio, or may not have a series branding at all, but 'Alivio quality' if you will, yes!
