I am in the process of choosing a moderately priced bike for my friend and I have a question about low-range Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.
I have Shimano BR-M445 on my Cube Analog Disc 2012. I went to the Cube site and saw that the 2013 model range is equipped with Shimano BR-M395. A lot of 2013 bikes from other manufacturers are equipped with Shimano BR-M395 as well.
On the internet, some people make an assumption that Shimano BR-M395 are the new version of Shimano BR-M445, just named awkwardly. It is believable, but I am not so sure about this. Can someone shed some light on this?

No, the first number after the M denotes the series, the higher the better (M9=XTR, M8=Saint down to M5 is Deore, M4 are usually 'non series' while M3 Acera/Altus). That's not to say the M395 may not be based on the M445 (downward migration) but it's not the replacement.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

May be branded Alivio, or may not have a series branding at all, but 'Alivio quality' if you will, yes!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
