i have a pair of 11 speed athena shifters and an 11 speed cassette.
could i fit these to my bike and use the shifters, with a 9 speed veloce rear derailleur

so 11sp shifters, 11sp cassette and chain but a 9 speed RD..

or will i have to wait until i have an 11 sp rear derailleur

guessing it would work fine but thought id best ask

Should be fine, as long as the jockey wheels are happy with the 11sp chain.

Hi Pinarellokid - no, it won't work.

The cable recovery in the lever relative to the RD movement / geometry is all wrong.

9s (after 2001) and 10s had the same geometry so you could mix and match those units without too many problems, so long as you were careful about jockey wheels & jockey cage widths, only really having to worry about some return spring tension changes in low end derailleurs after 2007.

To fit 11s into the space of 10s though required a total rethink of the shift lever, the amount of cable it recovers, the movement of the RD relative to the cable recovery and the sprocket spacing - it's also far more sensitive than even 10s to liberties being taken with set up.

I'd wait until you can get hold of an Athena 11 RD, and enjoy the shifting as it is supposed to be.

You'd also be best advised to get an 11s FD and chain-set, too - 10s items will work, but won't work at all well & you will almost certainly find issues with the 11s chain jamming between the 10s rings, or occasionally "riding" on top of the inner ring, not meshing with it.

It's really to get my winter 9 speed veloce upgraded you see
My Sunday bike is currently 11sp Athena. And I wanted to buy new record shifters and Record FD
Then I could have been running mainly record on that

Then match Athena 11 sp. shifters with Athena 11chainset and Athena 11 FD from old summer set up
Putting this on winter bike but only part I would need now then is 11 sp RD

Certainly much better to ride 11 rather than 9sp. Guess il wait until I have full set up then

Ribble are doing the rear Athena mech for a shade under 75 quid so should be able to pick up used for half that.
