Snapped joining link - Clarks 10 speed
This morning on my way into work I went to accelerate away from the lights and SNAP!
Broken chain on the floor, bike coasting to a halt by the kerb.
When I went back and picked up the pieces I found the chain and both sides of the connecting link still poking through it but one of the pins had sheared off where it narrows to catch into the plate of the other section (if that makes sense)
It was a reasonable cheap chain (Clarks self lubricating 10 speed - I had to buy one last minute and the only shop open was Halfrauds) but it was not a worn chain - checked yesterday and still under 0.75% stretch. has anyone else had this happen on quicklink/missing link type connectors? Maybe the old Shimano connecting pin is a better system after all, or was I just unlucky?

Just unlucky I think. I've had a couple of Clarks chains on my tourer and they've been trouble-free.
I had a KMC chain yield on me a month or two ago where one of the pins had not been adequately swaged into the side plate. KMC have a pretty good rep so I'm happy to put that down to bad luck.- - - - - - - - - -

I had a lucky escape with a KMC link. Fished the chain out of the jar of white spirit after cleaning and found that one half of the missing link had completely lost it's pin. Not in the jar, so it must've gone missing on the road. That probably explained the chain jamming in the rear mech at one point on the previous ride!
I suppose the good news was the fact it held out for another 20 miles with only one pin...0 -

How does a chain stay together when it "had completely lost its pin"? :?0 -

That's a very good point! Must've dropped out as I was removing the chain0 -
The Clark's 10 speed chains are actually repackaged YBN chains. No good.
Sorry to hear about your trouble with the KMC chain and thank you for your understanding.0
