Has anybody any experience of cycling in the Vosges and would you recommend the area? Also can you suggest a suitable base/hotel/campsite?

It's eight years since I toured that neck of the woods, but it can't have changed too much

The city of Nancy would make a good base, although it's a way from the main hills. Perhaps a better option would be Gérardmer, very close to Route des Crêtes.

How long are you going for?

You can see some snaps, the route and a brief write-up of my trip here:

It's an uphill climb to the bottom

Gerardmer a good base. It is at the foot of the Col de la Schutz. Can ride over to Munster and back; over to Munster and up the Platzerwassel, back along the Route des Cretes and down to Gerardmer; up to the Grand Ballon, and a few other climbs around too.

Plenty of rental accommodation too, and not too long a drive from Calais.

    I would go back.

Off here on Thursday, hoping to bag the Ballon d'Alsace, Col de la Schult, Grand Ballon and Planche des Belle Filles.
