Thinking to upgrade my derailer (think that's how it's spelt)
As my current one is wobbling and is turning black even after a good few cleans.
What do I need to be looking out for if I wasn't going for the same brand model it was fitted with.

RD-2300 shimano is the current mech

a new derailleur won't stop it turning black, sounds like you need to clean your transmission more often.
If it is genuinely worn out then I would replace with a shimano 105 (RD-5600 / 5700) or tiagra (RD-4500 / 4600) model. Any 9/10/11 speed shimano road mech will work but those 2 are probably best value for money.

Second hand bike. Was already in a bad state when I got it. I try to clean it when ever the mrs doesn't moan that I spend more time with my bike than I do with her.

Will take a look at those. How easy are they to fit?

Are you cleaning the chain when you clean the mech? Only the jockey wheels get really dirty on my mech, the rest is just a light grime off the road, especially if it's wet.

For a replacement check you get the right cage length (longer cage length is needed if you have a wide range of gears) and check it is compatible with your shifters. Generally any Shimano mech will work with Shimano levers, generally SRAM require SRAM levers.

I think the rest is down to price, looks, weight etc.

How is it that the mech stays dirty if you clean it regulary?

Not sure on that but it never looks shiny. Kind of looks like its stained
