Cassette Upgrade
I have a Specialized Allez 18 which came with a 12-25 cassette. At the weekend I was cycling with friends and found that I was running out of gears on both ends. At high speed I was spinning out and up some really steep climbs I was having to grind out max effort to keep any kind of sensible cadence.
I've decided it would probably worth changing the cassette and have been looking at the SRAM PG950 11-28. I've found it on CRC (see below) but it comes up as a mountain bike cassette. Will it work as a replacement on my road bike? Also, will an 11-28 work ok with my rear derailleur?

Any thoughts/help greatly appreciated.

Spinning out at high speed. Either you spin out at an extremely low cadence or it is time to get tucked in and slipstream down that hill.
A 28 over a 27 will not make a massive difference either, you simply need to get fitter and do more hills.
IMO you are better saving your money and riding to your ability - which will increaee with time and then you will wish for yet another cassette.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
I'm less worried about the top end speed, but I do need more gears for hill climbing. A 28 might not make much difference over a 27 but I currently have a 25, so surely that will be a fairly noticeable difference?0

Doh! Specsavers for me.
28 will make things easier for you over the 25 yes. As for rear mech you may get away with it - certainly a lot of Shimano road mechs will cope. Not sure what you have but check here if it is Shimano

IMHO there is very little use in an 11 tooth cog. When you replace a cassette with an 11 on it, that 11 will look good as new.0

I have Sram 11-28 on my Scott S30. I need the 28 round here without a doubt, but as the op says, I dont get a lot of use from the 11, unless I'm cruising down a very long gentle run with low cadence to keep my legs ticking over. I'd prefer a 12-27 tbh. Id really struggle with a 25 in my current state of fitness and the gradients round Kirklees.0
