Folks

Got a question that hopefully someone can help with. Apologies if this has been answered before. I did search but can't see anything. I've also searched the internet in general but struggling to find a definitive answer "in laymans terms!!!"

I have a 2012 Trek Madone 4.5 which has the stock drivetrain. i.e.

Drivetrain
Shifters - Shimano Ultegra STI, 10 speed

Front derailleur - Shimano Ultegra, braze-on

Rear derailleur - Shimano Ultegra

Crank - Shimano R565, 50/34 (compact)

Cassette - Shimano 105 11-28, 10 speed

I'm interested in swapping the cassette for a 12-30. I understand there is a Tiagra and an Ultegra version available.

Can I just swap cassettes over and I'll be good to go, or is there much more to it.

Thanks in Advance.

I have a similarly specced Trek 2.1 and went in the opposite direction (Tiagra 12-30 -> Ultegra 11-28) with no problems at all. It was a straight swap.

Goin down a size poses less problems than sizing up. Going from a 28t to a 30t shouldn't pose any issues as you should generally have enough length in your chain to accommodate the larger sprocket. You may also have to adjust your B-tension screw on the rear mech.

Just get the cheaper Tiagra cassette at about £20, you wont notice anything different over the Ultegra one, and also save a packet. Probably need to adjust the B screw only

I would NOT assume that your rear D(Ultegra) can handle a 30 tooth cog. You need to find out exactly which Ultegra rear D you have. The longer cage model can handle 30 but the short cage model may not be able to. Find out before you buy a new cassette.

The new 2012 onward short cage Rd model 6700A can handle 30 tooth

The 2011 or earlier 6700 can't although you may be lucky depending on hanger length
