To me, yes, but I'm a keen cook and I read US newspapers (well, Huffington Post, US edition). I first heard of her due to Anthony Bourdain being bitchy about her.
By the way, I'm a Brit living in Europe (Britain's not really part of Europe) and haven't been back for 8 years, but Deen must be even less well known on the continent than in GB.0
