Oversize Handlebars

I’m looking to replace my “standard” 26mm diameter handlebars and noticed that most replacements are now of the 31.8mm oversize variety.

Can anyone tell me if this larger diameter only relates to the stem clamp area or will the sections I grip also have a larger diameter than my current handlebars?

Only the bit that the stem clamps is bigger.

If you shop around you can still find the old size bars.
