Got £700 to spend on a hardtail MTB. It'll get used for a mix singletrack and moorland riding (Exmoor) but no racing or owt like that. I haven't ridden an MTB since my Orange P7 got nicked a couple of years ago. Things have moved on, and I find there are loads of brands around that I've not heard of!

Found Paul's have got some deals on Cannondale Trail SL1, http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m1b0s2p434 ... -SL-1-2012 for £699. Only got a 3.5 star review

OR

For £10 less I could get the Canyon Yellowstone 5.0. can't find a review of it

They've got the same brakes and forks, but the Canyon only has 27 gears compared to the 'dales 30-speed setup. They both weigh in at 12.5kg

OR

Radon Bikes. http://www.radon-bikes.de/xist4c/web/ZR ... 22248_.htm
£100 cheaper, 30 speed, but only an XC28 fork. Can find very little about this brand.

Anyone got one of these they can recommend/tell me to avoid? Or anyone got any particular opinons?

Radon are similar to canyon in as much as they are direct buy but my impression is they are not as good quality as the canyons (never owned either - just my impression from much mtb reading).

Theres not much in it between the canyon and dale spec wise TBH. Canyons have been getting great write ups across the board on the whole - not just for the great spec and value but that they are also good quality rides too..

The dale has a big fat 1.5 steerer tube which should mean the front end is pretty nice and stiff but looking at the pictures at least the canyon looks a shade slacker in the head angle which may indicate its a bit more playful on the trail.. Personally I'd go for the one you like the look of!

For an extra £50 it'd definitely be worth going for the Radon Race 6.0 from Bike-Discount. Reba fork and over 1.5kg lighter

Read the BR review, it was marked down for poor value to £1000, at £700 it would score higher.

More importantly does it's character fit what you want, read the BR review carefully!

That looks really good, but it's coming up as £782 + £5.25 shipping + £29 bike delivery surcharge, making it well over £800.
That puts it up against a different set of machinery, such as http://www.rutlandcycling.com/44935/For ... -Bike.html (which is £799 inc del via Rutland's eBay site) or the Grand Canyon AL6.0 (http://www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbikes ... tml?b=3008)

    Your right, that's 816.25, a whole 2% more!

My budget is £700. They guy who recommended the upgraded Radon said it was £50 more, turned out it was £116.25 more.

    Therefore the increase isn't 2%, but 17%.
