Stumpjumper FSR to double and bash

My mate has a 2011 Stumpjumper FSr which according to the spec I can find online has the following chainset
Custom SRAM S-1250, 7050 alloy arms, 10-speed triple, GXP spindle, S: 170mm, M/L/XL: 175mm with 44/33/22 alloy chainrings.
He wants to convert this to a double and bash setup - does anyone know if he can just replace the big ring with a bashguard and use a 36t shimano middle ring or does the SRAM 'custom' set up mean he needs special chainrings etc
Thanks
Jim

Having had a look at a pic of one - it looks pretty standard to me. I'd say its probably a simple - Yes, just change the outer ring for a bash.Lapierre Spicy 516 XTR custom (2013) -http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129323320
