Hi all,
I haven't been on the site for a wee while (at least 2.5 years i think!) due to falling in love with Motorbikes and other things! It looks as though the site is almost exactly as I remember it!
So, I am looking to get back into MTB and am soon to b in the market for a bike. I think my target will either be FR/Dh style my last ride was a Spesh Big Hit, or a dirt jump type hardtail (my last of which was a P1 cro mo).
What, in those style brackets, would be a good buy these days for around £200-300 (maybe a shade more). I know its a bit of an open question as bikes go for all sorts of prices, but in general, what can i expect / look out for?
Cheers,
Ben

Are you looking for a whole bike or just a frame?
If a whole bike - I'd go down the hardtail dirt jumper/ 4x style bike as it will naturally be better for the money - the full sussers of any quality in that price range are pretty old now..
Ebay is probably going to be your best bet for what you want for the money. Obviously the style of bike your looking at will probably have been abused, I'd ask questions about any frame dents, cracks and extent of paint damage and any parts that may be on the way out that would need replacing (which may help you gauge if the bike has been really badly abused). Sales with lots of pictures including up front honesty about scratches and wear and tear usually mean an honest seller - beware the seller trying to convince you a bike is perfect but there is only one poor quality photo up..
A quick search of 'downhill bike' there up a few promising looking contenders - have a look:
