Was tempering with my bike this morning and knackered a chain link.
Good excuse to buy a new chain if you ask me.
Question is I'm not sure what I should be getting.
Have a carrera tdf 16 speed.

any shimano compatible 8 speed chain. KMC do decent ones at a decent price. just make sure its says 8 speed compatible somewhere in the description.

Ok so kmc chain installed and cut to correct length. Gears indexed apart from the down shift. It doesn't seem to want to drop gears. There is cable slack when trying to shift onto smaller sprocket. Now if I tap the cable it's shifts. Any ideas?

Just noticed my gear cable is slightly damaged. That would seem to be the problem

Yes, dirty/damaged cables would be your problem. Check the outers too, particularly where they meet the downtube adjusters or the short-section by the rear mech.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Took the cable out. Took some pulling. It looks like its frayed where the barrel adjuster is halfway down the outer. Could this have happened from using the adjuster?
