Hi all!

Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.

My road bike has been used regularly and locked up overnight for the past year in a communal bike store. Last week I went down to find someone had tried to steal my bike, it was D-locked with an extended cable etc so they couldn't take much, however! they took both quick releases, saddle and the stem, all of which I've now replaced ... apart one bit which I don't actually know what it's called or where to buy a new one ... Can you guys take a look at the attached photo and tell me what the red circled bit is please?

Thanks

Andy

The piece beneath the stem is the top of the fork steerer, there should be some spacers that fill the gap between the top of the headset and the bottom of the stem. To be honest it looks as though the spacers are there, when you put the new stem on were there some metal or plastic rings already in place?

Looks like spacers to me, Should be able to pick them up from lbs for a couple of quid depending how many you need.

My knowledge is pretty limited. ( where's that postage stamp) but logic tells me if the handle bars weren't removed the spacers will still be there.

I probably should have uploaded the following photo too .... this is what my bike looks like now! I do have the handlebar still though as that was connected to the brake cables obviously :) ... seems to be missing that spacer bits? but from memory, that bit was a solid piece!

it could be that I just need some spacers then the stem, and a new "steerer" end? the steerer sticking out has a thread in the top!

They have stolen the complete top part of the headset and the spacers. Take it to the LBS and see if they have a spare you can pick up cheap. Just wondering we see a picture of the top of the head tube have they stolen the bottom part of the headset also. If in doubt could you post a picture of the front of the bike showing the complete head tube, thats the tube that the forks go through.

Incredible. Take it to a shop as that needs to be put right correctly for your safety. Also watch when you pick the bike up as the front fork will drop out the frame if it has not done so all ready.

    Utter wankers.

Stealing and then selling on components that are easily removed ( a few allen bolts and cable cutter) is the reason.
eg s pair of scruffy ancient Tiagra shifters on Gumtree for £50...
  • Yep they've stolen )at least) part of your headset and spacers - as you don't sound experienced get it checked by an lbs.

Unbelievable on two counts - who would steal spacers that cost so little and who would buy a used headset with no provenance ???

Many Thanks for your help so far guys :) much appreciated! I am planning on taking it to a specialist anyway as I'm sure the gears are knackered now, it looks as if they've tried to take the rear sprocket too so no doubt the gears need re configuring!

I don't think anything else has been taken from the forks as the way it was chained, you couldn't remove the forks , else I'm sure they would have gone too!!

All the best getting it replaced, take it to your LBS and they will sort you out with the right kit and best advice.

Low life scum is all I can say.

That's insane, can't believe someone would be trampy enough to nick stuff like the spacers. I'd take it to your LBS, they'll be able to get it all put back together properly and hopefully give you some tips on how to avoid it happening again. So sorry mate. :(
