Sad reminder of dangers of motorsport

Only seventeen minutes in to Le Mans this year and Allan Simonsen driving an Aston Martin had a big accident after a wheel went on a wet kerb.

Sadly he succumbed to his injuries in the medical centre.

Despite how much damage there was, you don't expect this in modern motorsport, but it seems the car may have hit a tree after punching a hole in the armco.

  • I was watching and it seemed like a big crash but not something that would be fatal. Absolutely gutted to hear the news RIP.

I'll be watching it all, love Lemans; was shocked when they announced the death. Very sad. RIP Allan Simonsen.
Thankfully fatalities very rare these days so it's easy to forgot how dangerous motorsport can be, did seem quite innocuous a the time. :(

Gutting that the lead Aston crashed out this morning.

Managed 3hrs kip albeit with Radio le Mans on in my ears.

Love this race. Heart breaking when something like this happens.
