Specialized Purgatory or Bontrager XR4

I want to replace the budget Nobby Nics on my Anthem with something not made from 95% plastic.
Need to be 2.2" (or a small 2.3") and good in most conditions and reasonably fast rolling. I used XR4's a couple years ago and they were great but the Purgatory's look like they could be good as well. Conti Barons look like they would do the job but the black Chilli versions are too expensive. Or would I be better off with something like a Racing Ralph front & Nobby Nic rear?

Nobby nics are all awful. Plastic or not. Can't speak for the purgatory but XR4s are a good all rounder. Can be had cheap too.A Flock of Birds

I have a brand new xr4 2.2 folding team issue tyre and a used one with plenty of tread on if your interested.
I had one on the front of my hard tail bike and was too large for what i'm riding on the bike.0 -
I can't fault purgatorys, my default go to all year tyre.0

Whats the width like?I know they are 2.3" but sizes seem to vary quite a lot between manufacturers.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Haven't measured them but they're way bigger than a maxxis 2.3. Come up big in my eyes.0

Are the 2.2 size a large tyre ?
The xr4 I have is massive for 2.2 compared with a nobby nic in 2.25.0 -
The XR4 2.2's are massive, I couldn't get one on the back of my Boardman FS Team without it rubbing, way bigger than the MK2 2.2 it replaced! Ended up putting an XR4 on the front with a Panaracer XC Fire Pro 2.1 on the back, both great all round tyres and reasonably fast rolling!2012 Boardman FS Team

XR4s arent massive.... MK2s are woefully undersized. Conti have 'special' rulers.A Flock of Birds
