Hey all,

picked up a flyer at the hub cafe in Newcastle today for this: http://velocitystreetracing.com/

They're closing the tyne tunnel to do a street race through it at night in september! how cool would that be? ... although the tunnel has a big dip in the middle, gonna be quite the climb up the other side.

they;ve got loads of quali races on turbo trainers around the north east which are free to enter.

anyone else get a leaflet? Think i'm going to have a crack at it...

Depends, if your coming from the north then the downhill isn't straight so your never gonna get much speed up, and if your coming from south then your climbing more than descending.

Few year ago they did it with cars, but there was still a police presence to stop people going crazy

Pedestrian tunnel will be better when they reopen it.

Depends which tunnel they are using, don't forget there are two. Presumably the other one will remain open with single lane working.

The northbound tunnel (the old one) turns back on itself, at the northern end, whereas the southbound (new) is pretty much straight down and straight up again.

Personally I can think of better places to ride a bike.

The new one still has a curve to the north end, but yeah I did forget the new one is there, hardly use the tunnel but used the pedestrian one regularly, can't wait to see what there changing to it for to be closed for a full year

I think it's mostly structural things. A new surface & general cleanup. Plus the installation of inclined lifts instead of escalators.

New surface is enough for me, can't see them getting rid of escalators as there heritage protected, even tho the things were never on, nightmare having to lug bike up them when the lifts are broke
