Cassette wobble?
I've just had to replace the 8-speed cassette on my Shimano R500 wheels; there was no spacer on the old one, so I popped the new on straight one and tightened up the lockring good 'n' proper. However - there is a slight wobble noticeable on the cassette, not much, but visible if I hold it and rock it slightly. I'm assuming it shouldn't do that... I'm not sure it seems to be having any negative effect on the shifting, but I don't want to ignore something like that if it's wrong.
At the same time (this started just before changing the cassette, so it's not caused by that) I've started to hear an interesting (and interesting is never good in these cases) noise from the freewheel so I suspect that needs looking at. The wheel sounds fine when turning under load so I assume the bearings are ok, but when I stop pedalling there's a fairly rough sound more often than not.
Could these two be related? Is it likely the freewheel needs some maintenance or replacing? Is is economical to do so on this wheel?
Thanks for any advice!

It sonds like the freehub is failing. These are replaceable parts.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Try popping in the spacer that came with the new cassette.Bianchi Infinito CV

Sorry if I wasn't clear - there was no spacer with the new cassette, and as a direct replacement for the existing (original) one that had no spacer to begin with, it didn't seem as if one would be needed - and surely if a spacer was needed then if wouldn't be getting clean shifting across the block?thecycleclinic wrote:It sonds like the freehub is failing. Thanks, I shall have to investigate that then. Slightly dumb question here, but I see a Shimano 8-speed 'freehub body' available from various places, is this what I need, or is that just the outer cassette carrier?0 -
If there was no wobble with the old cassette and all youhave done is swap to a different cassette, it is unlikely to be the freehub failing.
What cassette did you have before and what have you now fited.?
Some models of cassette have a built in spacer, some do not.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
It was a fairly straight swap from a 12-25 HG50 to a 13-26 HG50.
I don't know if the old cassette had any wobble to it, but I do know that the 'grindy' noise when freewheeling had started before I changed over, so it seems there's definitely something to look at in that area even if it has nothing to do with the cassette.

8 speed cassette should not need any spacer. !0 speed cassette do but that is not what is being used is it.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Exactly - it's an 8 speed cassette.
I'll look into the freehub - can anyone confirm that if it needs replacing all I need is a freehub body such as this, http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-c201rm40-8-speed-freehub-body/ or do I need something else?
