I've got a trek hardtail mountain bike a year old that i would like to change the rear derailleur and shifters to xt.
The bike is 9 speed and looking around theres not much option in 9 speed and the price of 9 speed xt is more than the price of a 10 speed kit.
upgrading the 9 speed bits as and when would be easier than replacing the whole lot.
Does having an extra gear make all that much difference ?
Would you guys think i'd better save the money and replace with 10 speed bits later on ?

I have shimano alivio shifters and deore m590 rear derailleur, bike is trek 4500 2012 model.
I have in my spares box a new 11-34 slx cassette that i bought for a steal 20 quid a bit back to put in the mix.0 -
I wouldn't bother, is good kit, run it intot he ground. Money best saved for a better fork.0

I've already got money for that, just not happy with shifters as tried some xt on mates bike and they are a massive difference.
The teeth on chain set looking worn as well after about 700 miles on it, this is shimano alivio too.
I did price up complete groupset with mixture of 10 speed slx chainset and xt gears for under 300.0 -

thanks for the link £77.96 shipped to the uk which is a good price even with cables.
Good job the deore m596 disc brakes are out of stock as my bike would have been getting some of these for the price bike discount is selling for even though they dont need to be replaced yet.0 -

Interesting you've kept the front 9spd mech and chainset ?
the 300ish was including changing the front parts as well which looks like i dont have to straight away after your post.0 -
