Can get left pedal off

Replace my Wellgo pedals that came on my Giant Defy, have managed to get the right pedal off with a lot of effort, but cannot get the left pedal off. I am aware that the right and left pedals are generally threaded differently and according to Zinn I should be going clockwise to loosen the left pedal.
Any tips ideas before I go to the LBS

another method, which is best done with two people to keep things stable...
with the crank pointing forward, put the spanner on the pedal also pointing forward and with the end of the spanner resting on a stable surface (a couple of bricks or the kerb for instance)
slowly put weight on the pedal until it frees up, be careful, as once it does release the crank and spanner will drop fastmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Whatever you do, put the chain in the big ring.
Whilst trying to get a mate's pedals off a few years ago (why do LBS's do them up so fricking tight? they only need nipping up!!), it suddenly came free after massive torque and my hand flew into the (unchained) big ring.
Looked like I'd been bitten by a crocodile.0 -
Thanks for the help, still cannot get it to budge. Any more ideas before I go to the LBS0

Slip a tube over your spanner/allen key to double it's length.
Make absolutely sure you're going the right way; left pedal loosens by turning clockwise when looking at bike side on, holding h/bar in left hand.0 -
position the crank so the pedal spanner is just above horizontal and stand on it. This usually gets the toughest of pedals off.0
