Shifting query, SRAM FORCE

I have SRAM Force shifters and front/rear mechs on my bike.

The shifting on the rear is excellent, fast and positive. The front however isn't, it sometimes takes a few efforts to move into the big ring or I ha e to hold the lever across a while until it shifts up.

How smooth should it actually be? Not sure if I was expecting too much from it but I thought it'd be nice a quick.

I went from Ultegra to SRAM Force and was amazed at how much more efficient the FD is. I think you need to look at the setup. If its struggling to get onto the big ring this would suggest not enough tension in the cable. Add tension half a turn at a time and see how you get on.

It should be smooth. Make sure that the front cable is seated correctly otherwise it'll take a lot of force to shift up.

The manual isn't particularly clear on this, but if you look near the screw there should be a little protruding notch at the back. The cable needs to go over this, not below. Unless you're quite careful I've found that the cable always wants to sit below the notch.

Found exactly the same with Apex and its the same routing - manual is obscure but if the cable doesn't loop roung that notch shift is terrible - also cable tension needs to be high for all SRAM AFAIK

    Which screw?

  • It's the screw that holds the gear cable in place at the top of the mech

    Yep the cable clamp bolt.

I also don't find that the cable tension needs to be that high at all - certainly not once I corrected the routing on the derailleur.
