This is my Planet X sl pro carbon build. I have started swapping parts from the cube across.

    There will now ;)

So Mrs H decided to head to bed......i decided to get the bike back out and do a bit more.

Both brakes on and cabled up (although i need to get a shorter bolt for the front)

    Front mech mounted

I haven't swapped the chainset over yet because i'm bidding on a FSA team issue carbon at the moment, if i don't win it i will swap the tiagra over. I want to try and save some weight while i'm building it up.

Theres a FSA team issue carbon crankset in the post but im going to fit the tiagra crankset today so I can get the gearing set up and check that the levers are in the right place etc...

looking good - the px sl can build up to a nice light bike - mine was a smidge over 7kg running sram red and a nice light k force crankset (and light weight wheels)

Will ask the question - when are you going to change the forks and/or wheels - the colour scheme is currently 'interesting'

    Both derailleurs cabled up.

Tempted to get the forks painted. New wheels wont be until winter time I would've thought. Christmas maybe.

    I like the forks!

    Thanks Matthew,

I like the red on the forks (i don't however like the bmc logos).

The wheels will eventually (i would hope sooner rather than later) be replaced with some all black ones, so the red would then work.

I'm looking out for a pro seat post & stem to match the bars.

Always good to start out on a balance bike - just make sure you don't fit stabalisers once you get used to it :D

Like it - I have a PX SL pro too - should really weigh it, but it feels v light.

She is finally finished. Bottom bracket turned up today so got it fitted and got the drivetrain finished off.

I dont have a finished weight for it yet but it is considerably lighter than the cube. Feels it on the quick ride around the block too.

A bit of an update really.

I decided that enough was enough with the BMC Easton fork and cracked out the wet & dry.

    Before

    During

    After

It could do with wet sanding down and another coat of clear but that can wait for a rainy day. I have also removed the blue Easton logos from the wheels.

Next stop new chainrings (double conversion) and cassette

    Great job. Looks perfect now.

How does it compare to your Cube?
  • cubedean
    cubedean Posts: 670
    Thanks,

Comparison to the cube. Certainly rides a lot smoother, position is still fairly racey but i could have benefitted from a small (52cm) rather than the 54cm. The cube seemed to fit slightly better but that was my own downfall. I would certainly consider another P-X in the correct size.

    Some better less cluttered photos.

I want it to look sexy but it just doesn't. Opinions on what you would change? Will have a weight next week finally.

Personally I would lose the blue bits.
  • Looks good, but maybe get an Elite Stealth bottle cage to finish it off, plus black bottles to match.
Still trying to convince the missus of the n+1 rule...!

Lose the white tyres - black is the only way to go with such things.

I think the main problem is the saddle height v the bars/hoods.

I know you need them where they are but it detracts from the look, which may be why you are struggling with it.

Small frames generally do not look as nice as larger ones. Things just do not seem in proportion. Same thing goes for too large a frame - there is a middle ground that just looks right.

The bike will still be just as good, but it will never look as good.
    Yellow is the new Black.

^^ Thanks, i agree whole heatedly with needing all black tyres. I will be doing this over winter when I pick up some new wheels.

I'll be swapping to a double shortly also, just need to decide wether to go compact or keep 53/39 and get a larger cassette (27t or something)

I actually like the white walls, but then I am lightly obsessed with white.

My personal view (as a PX owner) is that the biggest thing that stops PX bikes looking nice is the god awful logo.

I much prefer the old logo (but then I am biased!). However, I think the new black colour scheme is lovely - fab bike, hope you have many happy miles on it.

I personally think the bars and saddle are hideous!
  • I think the old logo for px's was waaaaay better than the current one.

For me there are a few reasons why it will never look sexy.
    1. White on the tyres.
    2. Mis matched frame and forks (inc red decals)
    3. Saddle looks like a pig.
    4. Shimano cables coming out of the hoods
    5.and the most important, IT'S A TRIPLE.
6.Oh, and it has Mtb pedals.
    7. tHen there is the blue and black, that's only good if you play for inter Milan.
    8. The rear mech and the chain set need to be the same colour.
    9. It has a dinner plate instead of a cassette.

Sorry, it's just my opinion. Now it might be a great ride, I know my Planet X sl is, but you asked how it could be made sexy, follow the above pointers and it will look like cindy Crawford, (still properly fit btw), currently it is like Cheryl tweeds new tattoo.
