First time building a bike from scratch, it was interesting shall we say.

After riding a friends bike for a week it was enough to convince me a 20" frame was too big for me. Id been looking at carbon frame etc to go silly light but noticed the weight change was minimal so ended up getting an On-One Scandal 16" 26r.

Ill apologise now for bad photos technical terms and poor workmanship!

Kit list

On-One Scandal 16" frame
Rockshox Tora 318 Uturns
Shimano M596 Deore brakes
Hope Saw 183mm rotors
Shimano M510 front and rear shifters
Shimano M510 front an rear mechs
Shimano M590 Crankset and Hollowtech II BB
Wellgo DMR V12 reps
Carbon Cycles 660mm riser bar
Superstar grey grips
Superstar Zephyr 70mm stem
Tioga 400mm seatpost (27mm)
Carrera Saddle
Superstar Crest ZTR rims with switch evo hubs (red hubs black rims)
Mucky nutz fender bender
Bionicon C.Guide
Shimano HG73 chain
Specialised Ground control (rear tyre)
Panaracer XC Fire Pro (front tyre)
SRAM PG970 rear cassete
QR seat post clamp
unbranded cable outers
XTR inner gear cables
FSA Orbit MX (red)
Carbon stem spacer

Took the frame to a LBS who kindly fitted the headset for me. Couldnt do much more till today but its built and feels very nice to ride

Seat post isnt actually worn its grease where i got a bit happy applying it. Had probably the shorted maiden ride ever got all of a few meters before i noticed that id forgotten to fasten the left crank arm on correctly locator clip wasnt in right and the bolts were still loose so it kindly slid off. Fixed that just as the heavens opened but it feels nice position wise im not leaning to far forward.

Got a couple things left to do, namely swap the pedals to the black ones i have hiding somewhere and maybe tart it up a bit with some red bolts in places but bar that im pretty chuffed with it. I'll get some proper photos of it tomorrow with a real camera not a Nokia's idea of one. Mean time left me know what you all think good or bad its all learning for me

  • I love the ON ONE frames they are so cool ! Seeing yours make me wanna buy one and build it up. I was looking at a steel frame though.

What a great bike, well done.

picked up a bashring which is now on, should I drop the derailleur down though to compensate?

Bit of an update. I've sorted the mech height out and treated myself to a new chain after mine went ping in a rather messy manner.
I think someones telling me not to order from them again :(

    temporary_zpsb806d194.jpg

Anyway new chains on mechs been dropped and I tarted it up a bit with some red chainring bolts

    temporary_zpse27dec0f.jpg

Lastly had to get some new pedals I stripped the old ones down as one had gone stiff found that the bearings had been running dry for a while and were pretty much fubar bearings all scored etc so they came off while i wait for new bearings. As they didnt match the bike (tart mode) decided to treat myself to some new ones in the form of some Wellgo B143's. Pretty light and feel very nice under the foot as it were.

    Update time!

Been racking up the miles as its been dry so its been getting rather dusty. Other week i noticed the left shifter was mis behaving not doing anything when i shift and no tension. opened it up to find lots of bits of plastic inside that shouldnt be there. Also after a run at a local bike park i found on the flats i was spinning out pretty quick.

So, front cogs are getting upgraded plenty of meat on them though so I'm keeping them for another build. Old set 22T and 32T, new set 26T and 36T so that should help there. New shifters in the form of a set of Deore XT M770's
Bar that and a new back tyre its pretty much as it was, I did change the saddle though to a Madison flux which is far easier on the backside.

No massive change bar the hope bash ring which i know is on wrong. Used the semislicks for the first time properly. with the bigger rings the speed difference is very noticeable! The XT Shifters are lovely as well very crisp changes and shifting in general is lighter.
Only issue i have had was loosing a brake bolt which meant i had to rely on the front brake coming back. turned out the pads were the original resin ones which were shocking so had to ride back pretty carefully. All in all very pleased with the ride. Next up a dubious adventure into SPD's for the winter miles :s

Anyway, Bike in its speedy setup

And the "I cant be bothered to bend down to change the pads" bike position

    New year and new bits.

Im full of cold so not done a huge amount but decided some fresh air may help do frced myself to do some bits on the bike. Picked up some new forks from Reluctant on here. Also fitted a new rear mech and wider bar.

    Bar - Crank Brothers Iodine 1 710mm
    Mech - SLX M662
    Forks - Fox RL32 Alps F100

Old mech beside the new one (didnt notice just how gunked that jocky had become)

    Bad photo of the forks
    20140105_125140_zps092db224.jpg

No photos of the bars, there black and, well bar like tottered up an down my road and the forks felt much plusher than the Tora's I had before not to mention a lot lighter. Once this colds shifted I need to get a shock pump though. May get some proper photos when I'm feeling better

Well ive been busy hammering around trails and wheezing my way up hills

Not a massive amounts changed more just me pushing my limits, SLX crankset dropper post and the maxxis crossmark up front which is going because I swear it wants to kill me. Ill find something chunky for the front that doesnt mind sand and mud.

    Bike as it is now

The 'Twiddly thing' operates the dropper post :)

That looks amazing. The twiddly thing looks nice. I can see you pay attention to detail too. Red bolt on the shifter, red ferrules, and red end crimps. Awesome 8)

Looks much better in off-road mode! Do you find the dropper post useful? I had to drop the saddle on mine a bit to be able maneuver it on the trail compared to how I had it set up for on-road use.

Thanks guys, the post has transformed how I ride to be honest. It has three heights, I've set the middle so it's my normal riding height, highest for when I'm hammering along chasing roadies and lowest for drops.
An yeah I'm a bit fussy with the finishing kit but who cares and red is faster anyway haha!

Only thing I'm not liking is the front tyre, I'm tempted to go big with another rubber Queen or what ever they renamed it too the rears so well planted compared to the front.

Been doing a lot of hacking around the woods etc on this over winter. Only real change was going wide up front with a 2.4 chunky monkey from On-One. Sounds counter productive but it seems to cut in better than the pana from before. Really been enjoying it but can really tell the bikes far more capable than the rider
