New S-Works Tarmac SL4 - annoying rattle!

Morning all! This week I picked up my new S-Works Tarmac SL4 that I had built up by my LBS with the following spec:

Ultegra groupset
3T Ergonova carbon handlebars
3T ARX Pro stem
Fizik Arione K:ium saddle
Mavic Ksyrium SLS wheels
Ultegra carbon pedals

Extremely happy with the bike and how it looks and it comes in dead on 7kg with scope to make her lighter in the future.

I have been out on a quick 10 mile ride around the block so far and while I was very happy with how smooth she was, I was getting a very annoying rattle from the front end. I tried playing with cables to see if they were maybe vibrating against each other but that didn't seem to be the issue. I have taken it back to my LBS and they could see nothing obvious that would explain the rattle.

Now I have found this link while have a look on the Internet:

http://forums.roadbikereview.com/specia ... 68165.html

It talks about internal brake cable rattling and can be solved by fitting O rings?

It is going back to the LBS to get this option looked at but I was wondering if there were other areas that may be the cause of this? Thanks for any help with this. For the sake of my sanity I need to find the cause of the problem as it will drive me bonkers.

Cheers,

D.

I have the same bike, and yes, it's the rear brake cable rattling in the frame, and yes, it's solved with some rubber doughnuts!

bernithebiker, thank you! If you're right then I will be so grateful!

I think you posted on my other thread about groupsets so thanks again.

    Hi bernithebiker,

The bike went into the LBS today and they fitted some rubber doughnuts to the rear brake cable in the top tube and this quietened down the rattle a bit but on less than perfect I'm still getting a rattle coming from somewhere on the bike. It sounds like the front but I guess it could be echoing from somewhere else. How far forward did you put the doughnuts?

Did the rattle go completely even on rough roads? I do have some metals washers where the cables go into the frame, wondering if these should be rubber washers instead?

Check that your wheels are sat properly in the drop outs and that the scewers are done up correctly.

Also check your stem bolts are tightened correctly.

Make sure they did the fix correctly as per that US forum - you can't just slide a few doughnuts onto the bare cable and hope for the best - they'll just vibrate down to one end and won't do a lot.

They need to be fixed onto some sheathing that you put over the cable.

Mine only rattled when some tension was applied to the brake cable - is yours like that?

It could be something else of course, but hard to think what on a new bike - bottle cage?!

Pick the bike up 5cm and drop it back down - does it rattle anywhere? Check every bolt and bearing for play.

The doughnuts were slid onto the cable and pushed forwards to even them out I've been told. I think that is why it seemed better when I initially rode it and now it seems the rattle is the same as when I first noticed it?

Mine rattles when I go over anything that is a bit rough.

I have checked around the bike and everything else seems fine with no loose bolts. The sound is definitely reverberating through the frame.

When I drop it from 5cm there is a definite rattle or vibration, some of this comes from the chain rattle but if I just drop the front end you can hear it coming from the front end. I can't see it being anything other than the internal cables.

I wish I could capture the sound it is making, might help. One thing is for sure it is driving me crazy. I love the bike and it is FAST and I just need to sort this before a trip to the Alps next month.

Thanks for all the help, very much appreciated.

Yep, I reckon the doughnuts have all moved back to one spot. They need to be tight enough that they do not move.
