I've got a Planet X XLS that's my do it all bike until I've got the cash for a road bike.

It has Avid BB7 brakes and clean sweep rotors and on the front they squeal like a scalded pig. Can anyone recommend a remedy? Will better pads help? If so, any suggestions... Or do I just have to persevere?

Any help appreicaited.

  • Are the discs and pads new?

If so then they will take some time to bed in and stop squealing, to speed the process up you could ride around somewhere secure at a reasonable speed and give the brakes a hard pull. Alternate between front and rear brakes and repeat the process around 10 times for each brake and see if that helps to resolve it.

Try cleaning the rotors with white spirit.

try some (automotive) brake cleaner on the pads and disc and then some copper grease on the back of the pads where they contact the brake caliper piston

I've done around 4/500 mile on it now I think.

I'll give the mentioned methods a try at the weekend, thanks!

    Organic pads can help too
