Replacing a rear mech with upgrade

Is it possible to go from a sora rear mech to a 105 rear mech without the need to change the rear block ( don't know if the spacing is the same ) or the shifter.
Currently i have a sora groupset, and the rear mech short cage and a 12-25t rear cassette

Yes you can. Its the shifter that dictates the movement. But why would you want to do only the mech?Trek 1.5 Road

Cause i'm a student and shifters are expensive lol, the rear mech is rubbish, just build quality, materials used etc. It was a second hand bike, but barely used brought in may, and 4000miles on British roads and over winter and it's done for basically.0 -
4000 miles is nothing for a rear derailleur. as long as they're looked after (cleaned and lubed) they should last years and tens of thousands of miles. I've recently removed the short cage derailleur that came with my bike (20 years ago) and replaced it with a long cage. The old derailleur had jockey wheels replaced about 5 years ago, but the rest of it was original and still worked a treat - i only changed it as i'm now living in a much hilly area than the lincolnshire fens and needed a 32 tooth rear cog.
I would try giving your current sora mech a really good clean and lube, also check the cable and cable housing into the derailleur and under the bottom bracket; they'll probably need a clean or replacing if they're worn. you'll probably find that there is nothing wrong with the sora mech and proper cleaning and maintenance is cheaper than buying a new mech if you're a student and money is tight.0 -
Everything else on the bike is working fine, and it's my dad who had it off the bike and cleaned it up and serviced it and said it was shoddy and if it was his he'd replace it, and seen asthough a 105 rear mech is only £20 more i thought might aswell skip tiagra.
The bike itself was regularly used 2-3times a week through all weather, and was regularly cleaned and lubed, everything else is working fine, just the rear mech.0
