I know this is the crud and I haven't actually done any more research, but if this is correct it's confirming the world is a fucked up place!

I haven't read into this more than reading that short page, however the one thing I would say is that these hackers are, at the end of the day, criminals. For every one time they're are right about a rapist or something similar, they get about 100 wrong, or, they're not hacking anything that should need to be 'leaked' (peoples personal finances or emails!).
That said, court should be doing things on a case by case basis, and in instances like this, the judge should take into account the good will of the hacker.
It does call into question the whole 'justice' thing though. Who deserves more jailtime, a rapist or a hacker? Is someone that is dangerous to your email inbox as big a risk as Gazlar is to your daughters? It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

and the Hackers to keep there heads down.
just like this guy who has leaked the info that the US logs all calls etc.
he will have signed up for jail time by doing what he has done."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

because, as I've told girls before, whats about to happen is our little secret and if you tell anyone, they won't beleive you and your mum will go to jail0

There is no arguement here, a computer hacker should not get the same, let alone a longer sentence than a rapist.0
-
What if the hacker stole £10million from people, is he not due the same sentence as a rapist, or still less?It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Nope,
Who would you rather be on the streets, hacker or rapist?
This is all opinion, if you think the amount of money the hacker steals determines which is the worser crime then fair play - I dont care if the hacker stole £1 or £1m.0 -

So if he stole £1,000 from 10,000 people, got arrested, released and did the same again, and could continue doing so until he died, causing misery and damage to thousands, you'd rather he spent a few years in prison, compared to a rapist who can be in prison up to 19 years, and gets weaker with age, to the point a woman could easily fight him off?
You say you don't care, but what if it was your money, or your identity, that he stole? You'd only want that person in prison for a couple of years at most?It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

To be honest i take a dim view on most crimes, anything above petty crime to me and all your rights are instantly lost. Why bother categorising them into prison sentence lengths? Because we can't afford to keep shelling out money on them that's why.0

Shoot them all I say. Bring back capital punishment! It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Yeah? If it was his first offence I wouldnt even want him to get 5 years. If he keeps re-offending then double the sentence each time he re-offends. At the end of the day he is stealing. That is nothing compared to rape.
The purpose a prison sentence serves for hackers is a deterent. The purpose a prison sentence serves for a rapist is to physically keep them off the streets.0 -
but we're assuming he's hacked banks etc? all I know for sure is that he exposed the guys who raped that girl.
not a criminal if that's all he's done surely?0 -

Exactly - lets concentrate on the crime he is being convicted for, not what he is capable of doing. As if that's what the courts did, you lot would be in jail0 -

I am, of course, purely being a Devil's Advocate in this. I completely agree that the rapist should get the book thrown at him, and that hacking shouldn't be compared to it. Whether it is 'worse' though isn't fair, as they're different things. It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

No, you have to at least work to get them I'd get the 20k back through insurance and you'd spend 5 years in prison and have a pretty sh1tty life afterwards.
I do however accept your point, in that your example could easily have been £1m that you stole on your first offence, and that would be worth 5 years in prison.
But yeah, I have kind of forgotten the original arguement here.0 -
