Hi All
My beautiful Spesh Stumpjumper was nicked in May (viewtopic.php?f=10040&t=12922667)
I've been naively hoping for a call from the police to say its been recovered bu coming to realise that ain't going to happen.

... so on to the subject of replacing it. I'm on my 17yr old Rockhopper for now, which does an alright job.

I would like:
- Light hybrid/mtb
- Probably a hardtail
- Budget up to £900

I was looking at a Specialized Crosstail and Trek 8.5 but I'm not too sure which bikes are around that fit this bill.

I will use it most of the time for commuting, but will also use it off road on forrest trails/unsurfaced roads+tracks.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

That Btwin does look nice. Decathlon have a shop nearby in stockport, so may go and see if they have one i can see.
What are Whyte's like? I'm a bit out of touch with what is decent now in terms of mtbs, but just seen this on Ed bike co-op which seems to fit my bill:

Even with no brakes that would be cracking value.

Seat tube looks very slack for an XC bike, maybe not so comfortable up hills? Could just be the way the photo is taken but i hate slack seat tubes for pedalling efficiency.

Edit: nevermind the photo appears to be stretched looking at their own website, its 73.5 degrees which is normal.

Ok, I know this isn't a hardtail... And I know I'm biased... But this is a hell of a lot of bike for £900!

There is some really good hardtail deals on Paul's at the moment too, although above budget the carbon Scott Scale looks fantastic.

This is amazing. Brakes look to be Elixirs, though zooming in on my phone is a bit ropey. With a frame and wheelse that light, I can't see it being heavier than the Reaction.

    I'd imagine around 24lbs.

Is very good value, but not 'XT Dynasis 30 speed' as Rutland suggests - only two parts are XT! Still a nice mix though.

If you want a fast XC hardtail then the Giant XTC would do the job. I had one until I broke the frame (my fault). It seems to take very little effort to ride very fast, flies up hills and is pretty good on twisty single track. Just don't ride 6' drops on it, they dont like that.

This one is pretty good value.

Yet again you spot something that matters so little yet you feel the need to comment.
