C2C bike buying advice

Hello all,
I currently have a Specialized Secteur road bike, but I have signed up for a Coast-to-coast bike ride through work. The trail does go off-road, but nothing to extreme, so I am looking for a new bike to fit the bill. I was hoping some of you out there could recommend an entry level bike (<£400) which would be ideal for this ride, I do not want to go over the top with costs as I will still primarily be using my road bike. If anyone has any info on good second hand bike retailers with good discount I would also be interested in perusing that avenue.
